Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao (Teluguచెన్నమనేని విద్యాసాగర్ రావు, born 1942) is the present Governor of Maharashtra.[2] He took oath as the Governor on 30 August 2014.[3] He was Union Minister of State for internal affairs in the Vajpayee-led BJP Govt government from 1999. He was elected to 12th and 13th Lok Sabha from Karimnagar in Telangana as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate.

Origins and Education[edit]

He was born in NagaramKarimnagarTelangana on February 4, 1942 to C. Srinivasa Rao and Chanddramma. He had three brothers. He completed his schooling in VemulawadaPUC in HyderabadB.Sc. in Nanded of Maharastra and later studied law at Osmania University.

Legal and Political Career[edit]

As a Lawyer and Politician[edit]

After completion of law, he started working as lawyer. He was elected as convener(Chairman) of Janasangh, Karimnagar in 1972. He went to jail during the emergency period. He represented the BJP in Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Metpally assembly segment from 1985 to 1998 and entered into the Parliament by winning Karimnagar Lok Sabha constituency in 1998 and in 1999. He was also the BJP state president in 1998.

As a Minister[edit]

He was Union minister of State for Home affairs in the cabinet of Atal Behari Vajpayee in 1999. Later, his portfolio was changed to Union Minister of state for Commerce and Industry.

As a Governor[edit]

He was appointed as a governor of Maharashtra on 30 August 2014. His appointment was issued by 13th President ofIndia Mr.Pranab Mukherjee after resignation by K. Sankaranarayanan. His oath was administered by Chief Justice ofBombay High Court Mohit Shah.[4] On September 26, 2014, he accepted the resignation of Prithviraj Chavan as his party had no majority, and President's Rule was imposed on Maharashtra.[5]

Family[edit]

His wife's name is Vinoda. His elder brothers are Ch Rajeshwara Rao is a former Communist leader and another brother is Ch Hanumantha Rao who was the chancellor of Hyderabad Central University and other brother Ch Venkateshwara Rao. Most of his family members are settled in DallasFlorida and Dubai.
